From ‘Maria Maria’ to Marijuana: Carlos Santana to Launch Cannabis and CBD Brands
Legendary guitarist Carlos Santana is getting into the cannabis businesses.
The 10-time Grammy award-winning artist who was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 has partnered with Northern California’s Left Coast Ventures to develop a line of cannabis and CBD products.
According to a press release, the forthcoming cannabis brand, which is slated for a summer 2020 launch, will initially include pre-rolls and flower offerings. Meanwhile, hemp-derived CBD topicals will also hit retail shelves in the fall.
"We are excited to launch cannabis and hemp CBD brands that deeply respect Latin heritage and celebrate the unique light of every individual," Left Coast Ventures CEO Brett Cummings said via the release.
In an interview with Green Entrepreneur, Santana said he decided to enter the cannabis sector to “help people be more creative.”
"Cannabis is a window or a door to different awareness of consciousness," Santana said in the press announcement. "It gives you the choice to perceive through a different filter of awakening and healing, the misperception of distance as an illusion, which keeps you from being centered in your essence-core. It helps you arrive at knowing, accepting and owning a quality of life that is being with joy!"
Based in Santa Rosa, California, Left Coast Ventures is backed by private equity fund Privateer Holdings and has existing cannabis partnerships with Grateful Dead drummer Micky Hart and the estate of reggae icon Bob Marley.
In addition to establishing partnerships like the one with Santana, the company acquires and invests in U.S.-based cannabis and hemp ventures. Some of its subsidiaries include Landseye, a cannabis distributor, and Half Moon Grow, a cultivator.
Beyond its music-centric partnerships, the Left Coast Ventures portfolio of brands includes “Chill” cannabis-infused chocolates, Soul Spring CBD botanicals, and New Frontier non-alcoholic cannabis brews, among others.
Santana is one of many popular musicians lending their names to cannabis brands. One of the more notable artists pushing pot products is renowned rapper Snoop Dogg, who owns the "Leafs" marijuana brand is a general partner in cannabis venture firm Casa Verde Capital. Meanwhile, country legend Willie Nelson has a line of CBD products called Willie’s Remedy, and pop superstar Post Malone hawks the “Shaboink” line of hemp and cannabis pre-rolls. Canadian rapper Drake also jointly owns a cannabis venture called “More Life Growth Company” with Canopy Growth Corporation.
