Roles & Responsibilities
Manage a multidisciplinary team of Scientists including: Chemists, Formulation Scientists, Process Engineers, and Technicians, to develop and optimize new innovative or existing products.
Key deliverable is to bring products from inception to launch by means of managing a Product Development pathway spanning the functional areas of formulation development, process development, analytical testing, intellectual property, regulatory compliance, documentation, business/market strategy, and project management.
Key milestone deliverables include: Formulation Development Protocols/Reports, Optimization/ Stability/Characterization Protocols/Report, Process Feasibility Assessments, Process Development reports, Validation and Qualification Protocols/Report, Method validation reports, testing plans, Finished Product Specifications, summaries of experimental data, filed/granted patents, Gantts, and weekly updates.
Plan formulation optimization experiments, taking into account Health Canada regulations on excipients, daily tolerable dosages, ICH guidelines, Cannabis Act, and GPP scale-up where applicable.
Scope the design and process flow of manufacturing lines and solutions, support the purchase of processing equipment, and the scale up of process to production scale.
Identify patentable areas within the landscape, surveil the patent landscape, and manage the intellectual property portfolio.
Provide insight on regulatory and product development pathways for commercialization.
Analyze results and provide strategy and insight to team
Manage pre-clinical and clinical studies and design as required
Coordinate the development and validation of new analytical methods with methods development team and contract test houses.
Manage physical lab resources, allocation of space, selection and purchasing of analytical equipment needs, ordering of reagents, chemical inventory, cannabis inventory, and supply chain.
Allocate work packages, responsibilities, and collect data summaries from Scientific team.
Manage the drafting of SOPs as necessary.
Cross-functional collaboration with Manufacturing, Regulatory Affairs, Clinical Affairs, Quality Assurance, Operational Quality, Compliance, Inventory, Procurement, Finance, Agronomy, and Marketing.
Key point of contact for vendor management and partnerships.
Perform IP due diligence and vendor/partner audits.
Advise on investment, strategic, and marketing/business opportunities.
Grow the product development team to meet business requirements.
Provide analysis for COGs/P&L
Keep up-to-date with rival strategy, products, and relevant business news.
Conduct continuous gap-assessment of the product development pathway.

Education & Experience
PhD or MSc in chemistry, pharmaceutical formulation, physicochemical sciences or alike
At least 3 years of work-related Product Development (R&D) experience in the pharmaceutical industry or a relevant field
At least 3 years’ experience in a senior leadership or management role
Strong background in analytical chemistry, formulation, small molecules, food science, veterinary, topicals, nutrition, and/or natural health products
Familiar with developing intellectual property for patents
Familiar with Good Manufacturing Practices, Good Production Practices, Good Documentation Practices
Current understanding of Cannabis Act and GPPs is preferred
Excellent communication skills, fluent in English
Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint
Available to travel to company locations within the GTA
Must pass an RCMP security clearance
Exceptional background in Product Development (R&D), formulation, analytical chemistry method development, patents, GMP, food safety, and budget
Core technical competencies include HPLC method development
Technical experience with various forms of mass spectroscopy and chromatography
Experience drafting protocols, reports, and SOPs
Prior experience working on multidisciplinary teams
Background in manufacturing process design, analytical method development, patents, and food safety
Current understanding of Cannabis Act, and GPPs is preferred
While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to lift up to and including 25lbs, sit and/or stand for extended periods of time and reach with arms/hands. Walking, climbing stairs, standing, and moving items is occasionally required. The employee must wear the required PPE to complete their job functions. The company reserves the right to modify PPE requirements based on regulatory, compliance and operational needs.Work Environment
When employees are required to perform duties within the Greenhouse or Manufacturing facilities, they may be exposed to unprocessed cannabis products/supplies. The Greenhouse and Manufacturing environment can be temperate, noisy and dusty at times. The employee will be provided with the appropriate (PPE) Personal Protective Equipment and they must adhere to legal requirements regarding PPE to manage their own personal safety under these conditions. In addition, to ensure compliance and minimize contamination within a controlled environment, the employees may be required to wear latex gloves a cleanroom suit.
