The Financial Accounting Manager will be an integral part of the Finance team in leading the retail operations accounting, including internal controls, reconciliation, financial analysis, reporting and system improvements.  Reporting to the Vice President of Finance, the Financial Accounting Manager will have the opportunity to build on processes and establish new ones for a growing retail company. The role will be based out of Choom’s Store Support Centre in Vancouver.


  • Lead retail operations accounting, the monthly close and financial reporting process, including management analysis.
  • Oversee the execution and review of financial controls, including daily and monthly reconciliation.
  • Adhere to month-end, quarter-end and reporting deadlines. Month-end close and signoff target is 10 calendar days following month-end.
  • Prepare the monthly management report of budget to actual results, monthly variance analysis, and reporting on store KPIs.
  • Establish and maintain the company's accounting policies, practices and procedures under IFRS.
  • Build internal controls and process documentation, Identify risks and drive efficient internal processes.
  • Manage the acquisition and accounting of capital assets and leases (IFRS 16) and ensure that they are properly recorded, amortized, and disposed of as appropriate in accordance with IFRS.
  • Assist in the continuous improvement and add-ons for the financial ERP system.
  • Support the preparation of consolidation working papers, external financial statements, MD&A, and other public facing financials.
  • Manage the onboarding of new stores for accounting and reporting purposes.
  • Adjust general ledger balances by posting and/or adjusting journal entries, and prepare monthly working papers.
  • Identify, investigate, analyze and report on account variances.
  • Maintain general ledger balance sheet accounts by reconciling accounts details and control accounts.
  • Review and approve AP coding of invoices and ensure coding is appropriately recorded in GL accounts, store and department cost centres.
  • Ensuring compliance with appropriate regulations and tax laws including timely filing of related tax returns (i.e. HST, tax returns, cannabis regulatory reporting as required).



  • Accredited accounting designation with experience in public accounting.
  • 3+ years of post-designation experience at a public company, preferably with experience in retail.
  • IFRS accounting knowledge.
  • Strong communication skills and proven ability to liaise with key stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently in a dynamic environment.
  • Commitment to excellence and a high attention to detail.  
  • Excellent Excel proficiency, including experience with pivots, vlookups and Excel formulae.
  • Experience with system development and IT implementation projects is an asset.
